AIStudyBuddy

Participating Institutions

We are nine institutions at three universities.

We are educational scientists, computer scientists, mechanical engineers, mathematicians, philosophers, sociologists and economists.

We are professors, technical and administrative staff, doctoral students, student assistants and research assistants.

Our goal is to use data to generate information and recommendations that make successful studying and good study organization easier.

Educational Data Science (EDS) is concerned with the theory and practice of supporting and improving teaching and learning through the use of data. The main aim of using data in education must always be to make learning and teaching more attractive, effective or efficient.

The main task of EDS is to design the StudyBuddy for students. The employees contribute to the development of BuddyAnalytics and the presentation of recommendations in StudyBuddy.

The department is headed by Prof. D. Maren Scheffel.

The Center for Teaching and Learning Services combines the strengths of five sections. Together they offer a wide range of services to improve study conditions and teaching quality at RWTH Aachen University.

The main task of the CLS in the AIStudyBuddy project is the management of the overall project and project coordination at the Aachen site. In addition, the employees are playing a leading role in the development of the reference architecture for AI-supported study monitoring.

The CLS is headed by Priv. Doz. Dr. Malte Persike.

The Department of Studies, Teaching and Quality Management supports the members of the University of Wuppertal in the (further) development of degree programs. Its main tasks include the coordination of central quality projects that improve study conditions and ensure student success, particularly in the introductory phase of studies.

Key tasks in the project are the development of the data reference model and project coordination at the Wuppertal site. The employees contribute to the implementation of the data architecture and the development of the rule-based models as well as the development of buddy analytics.

The department is headed by Dr. Simon Görtz

The Knowledge-Based System Group deals with the topics of knowledge representation, artificial intelligence and learning robots.

The main task of the research group in the project is the development of course planning with rule-based AI technology. The employees are also involved in preparing the results for StudyBuddy.

The KBSG is headed by Prof. Dr. phil. Gerhard Lakemeyer.

Go to Research Group

The research area includes theories, methods and realizations of innovative learning technologies and the didactics of computer science. Since 2002, the staff have been researching how learning and teaching can be improved through innovative technologies.

The main tasks of the LT in the project are the design of StudyBuddy and BuddyAnalytics as well as the development of the reference architecture for AI-supported study monitoring. In addition, the employees are involved in processing the results of rule-based AI and process mining.

The teaching and research area is headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ulrik Schroeder

Go to Chair

Research at the Chair of Ethics of Digital Methods and Techniques (EDMT) sees itself as a contribution to socio-political questions of technological change. The progressive use of digital technologies is at the center of the current challenges of social ethics.

EDMT supports the project in assessing ethical risks. Key tasks include data protection impact assessments as well as the development of StudyBuddy and BuddyAnalytics and their evaluation.

The chair is held by Prof. Dr. Sebastian Weydner-Volkmann.

The scope of Process and Data Science encompasses all activities in which discrete processes are analyzed, revised and/or supported in a data-driven manner. Process-centricity is combined with a large number of data science techniques.

The main tasks of PADS in the project are the development of cohort tracking using process mining and the preparation of the results for StudyBuddy. The employees are involved in the development of the data reference model.

The chair is held by Prof. Dr. Wil van der Aalst.

The Wuppertal Institute for Research in the Economics of Education pursues the goal of creating a competence center for research in the economics of education, which is also responsible for promoting young academics in this field of research. In particular, current and relevant issues in the field of education economics, education research and education policy are investigated at the institute.

The main task of the WIB in the project is to design the BuddyAnalytics. The employees are involved in the development of StudyBuddy and the evaluation of the overall system.

The WIB is headed by Prof. Dr. Kerstin Schneider

As a central point of contact, the ZfW brings together in-depth knowledge about studying and teaching in the areas of university didactics, eLearning and the Writing Center. We also address current topics, take part in discussions and network in projects.

The main task of the ZfW in the project is project coordination at the Bochum site. The technical and administrative staff in Bochum work on the development of the data model and implementation of the data architecture, they support the development of rule-based AI and the development of BuddyAnalytics.

The ZfW is headed by Dr. Peter Salden.
